PROGRAM FOR SJHS CONFERENCE
WASHINGTON, DC 11/2-11/4/07
The 2007 Southern Jewish Historical Society conference, co-sponsored by the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington, will take place November 2nd to 4th in Washington, DC. Conference participants will see Library of Congress holdings on southern Jewry, and visit, have dinner, and attend services at a historic synagogue.
The title of the conference is Honoring the Past for the Sake of the Future. Featured speakers include Karla Goldman (Jewish Womens Archives), who will place Jewish responses to Hurricane Katrina in historical perspective; Dianne Ashton (Rowan University) who will discuss the origins of American and particularly southern Hanukah celebrations; and Shuly Rubin Schwartz (Jewish Theological Seminary), who will compare and contrast the leadership styles of Carrie Simon and Henrietta Szold. Tentative panelists include John Baron (Tulane University), Wendy H. Bergoffen (University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh), Kimberly Hartnett, Nick Kotz (American University), Rabbi Allen Krause , Julian Levinson, (University of Michigan), Adam Mendelsohn (Brandeis University), Dan J. Puckett (Troy University), Leonard Rogoff (Jewish Heritage Foundation of North Carolina), Marianne Sanua (Florida Atlantic University), Sally Stokes, Bryan Stone (Del Mar College), Stephen J. Whitfield (Brandeis University), Hollace Weiner, and Maury Wiseman (University of Florida). Panel subjects range from Jews and other minorities, a Harry Golden roundtable, failures and successes among East European Jews in Texas, literature and music in the nineteenth- century, the shadows of Europe, power, authority, and identity, mid-twentieth century quotas and institution building, to meet the authors.
In addition to the conference sessions, an exciting optional tour is being offered that will include a special briefing at the Israeli Embassy, a behind the scenes tour of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, and a reception at the home of Jewish cookbook author Joan Nathan, featuring some of her recipes. Student Scholarships
The SJHS has limited funding available to assist graduate students with travel costs for the Nov 2-4, 2007 Washington conference. The funds are for documented regular travel costs associated with the conference and not covered by other funding sources including the student's institution. They are paid by the SJHS treasurer from receipts. Personal expenses like telephone calls and newspapers are not included. Funding will be awarded on a mixed needs and first-come, first-serve basis.
