2003 Student Essay Contest

The Southern Jewish Historical Society awards $500 for the best paper on Southern Jewry by a Graduate student and $250 for the best paper by an Undergraduate.  The presentations are made at the annual meeting each fall.

Submissions must focus on a subject related to Southern Jewish history, use primary sources, include documentation, and be typed double-spaced.  The submitter's name, address and academic status should appear only on the cover letter and not in the body of the paper.

2002 Essay Winner - To be announced

2001 Essay Award Winners - Mark I. Greenberg, Student Essay Award Chair, announces the winners for 2001 are:

$500 Graduate Award

Arlene Rotter, a doctoral student in the Department of Educational Policy Studies at Georgia State University, for her paper, “Climbing the Crystal Stair: Annie T. Wise’s Success as an Immigrant in Atlanta’s Public School System (1872-1925).”  

$250 Undergraduate Award

Reed Baker of Emory University won the undergraduate award of $250 for his essay, “Both Sides of the White Sheet: The Ku Klux Klan and Southern Jews, 1915-1929.”
