The Southern Jewish Historical Society announces publication of volume 3 of its annual journal, Southern Jewish
History.
Featured in this volume are articles dealing with the rise and decline of the Jewish community of Bessemer, Alabama, by Terry Barr; the businesses and lives of the Guggenheimer and Untermyer families of Lynchburg, Virginia, by Richard Hawkins; and the interaction between important Protestant and Jewish clergy in New Orleans, by Scott Langston.

The Southern Jewish Historical Society was founded in Richmond (VA) more than a quarter century ago. Each year the Society holds a conference in a different city. This year, the Society’s 25th annual conference will be held November 3–5 in Cincinnati, Ohio, where it will be hosted by the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives. This is first year that the Society will meet north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Next year’s conference will be held in Norfolk, Virginia, and the following year, in Shreveport, Louisiana.
The Society is dedicated to recording, preserving, and publishing materials about the Jewish experience in the South and to promoting research in and the study of Jewish history and life of this region. Current officers are: Catherine C. Kahn (New Orleans, LA), president; Hollace Weiner (Fort Worth, TX), secretary; and Bernard Wax (Brookline, MA), Treasurer. Board of Trustees includes Sue Anne Bangel (White Stone, VA); Minette Cooper (Norfolk, VA); Bernard Goldstein (Atlanta, GA); Mark I. Greenberg (Jackson, MS); Herbert Heltzer (Richmond, VA); and Marcus Rosenbaum (Washington, DC).
SJHS is a 501(c)(3) corporation and is registered with the South Carolina Secretary of State as a nonprofit public benefit corporation. Regular memberships begin at $35 per year. The membership address is PO Box 5024, Atlanta, GA 30302.
