The Southern Jewish Historical Society is supported entirely by membership dues, grants, and private contributions. Funds raised by SJHS are used to underwrite our annual conference, our quarterly newsletter and annual journal, and the grants we award for academic research and archival work. The Society is run by volunteers, with no office overhead. We welcome contributions large and small to support the following SJHS operations:
- Conferences are held in a different southern city each autumn. They feature tours of historic sites and places of Jewish interest; lectures by a mix of professional and local historians, graduate students, and other researchers; cultural events; good food; and ample opportunities to network and socialize. Participants are an engaged mix of leading scholars and laymen who share a passion for southern Jewish history and culture.
- Grants are awarded to graduate students, historians, and other professionals with a focus on southern Jewish history to offset the expenses of research and publication, special exhibitions and conferences. We also support the work of synagogue archives, cemetery surveys, and local Jewish historical societies that are engaged in recording, documenting, and preserving aspects of southern Jewish life. Awards are chosen by a committee composed of professional historians and archivists.
- Southern Jewish History, our highly respected academic journal, has been published annually since 1998. Your contribution would support production costs.
- A gift to the Society’s Endowment Fund has especially lasting impact. Your direct contribution will be held in perpetuity, with proceeds from income or capital gains used by the Society to support its operations. The Fund is invested in a conservative basket of mutual funds managed by the Richmond Jewish Foundation.
